KEPUB: why your Kobo reads better with it
Kobo devices carry two reading engines: a dated one for the EPUBs you sideload, and the good one reserved for books from Kobo's own store. KEPUB is how you get your books into the good one.
Two engines, one switch
Open a sideloaded EPUB on a Kobo and you're in the legacy renderer – functional, but slower to turn pages and stingy with features. Open a Kobo store purchase and everything feels snappier. The difference isn't the book, it's the engine, and the switch between them is embarrassingly simple: the file's format. A KEPUB is just an EPUB whose sentences carry small markup spans the modern engine uses to track reading position precisely – that's the entire trick.
What actually improves
- Page turns get visibly faster – the most immediately felt change.
- Reading stats switch on: time left in chapter, time left in book, session tracking.
- Highlighting becomes sentence-accurate instead of grabbing sloppy ranges.
- Footnotes pop up in place instead of yanking you across the book.
- Search inside the book runs quicker.
Nothing about the book's content changes – same text, same images, same styling. Other readers open a KEPUB as a perfectly normal EPUB; the Kobo markup is invisible to them.
Converting: the old way and the easy way
The traditional route is Calibre plus the kepubify plugin – install the app, add the plugin,
configure a device profile, convert through the library. Solid choice if Calibre already
manages your books. The easy way is the EPUB to KEPUB converter:

Getting it onto the Kobo
- Connect the Kobo over USB and tap Connect on its screen.
- Copy the file anywhere in the Kobo's storage – a
Booksfolder keeps things tidy. - Keep the double extension exactly as downloaded. The
.kepub.epubfilename is the signal that activates the modern engine; rename it to plain.epuband you're back in the legacy renderer. - Eject, let the import finish, open the book. Reading stats in the footer means it worked.
Worth doing first: tidy the metadata
Kobo's library shelves books by the metadata inside the file, so a book labelled “Unknown Author” stays unknown on-device. Thirty seconds in the metadata editor before converting – title, author, series name and number – pays off every time you look at your library, and Kobo reads the series info to group trilogies properly. Coming from the Kindle world instead? The trip runs the other way too: AZW3 to EPUB first, then KEPUB.
